Types of Pigmentation and Healthy Tips to Prevent It

Skin discoloration is not new to everyone; in fact it affects all human beings regardless of the skin color and the ethnic background. If you ask any aesthetic clinic in Singapore regarding hyper pigmentation, you will realize that such skin problem is common and quite rampant. There are different types of skin pigmentation and fortunately there are ways to prevent it.

 Age Spots

Most skin care specialist will agree that this is one of the most common type of hyper pigmentation. Everyone ages therefore it is just normal for all people to experience such hyper pigmentation. Over exposure to sunlight can also cause age spots and it’s usually seen on people over 40 years old. This is typically found on areas exposed frequently to sunlight such as the hands, face, arms, and even back. You will know if it's age spot as it is characterized by uneven patches from light brown to black pigment on your skin.

Age spots can be prevented by avoiding too much exposure to sunlight and observe a healthy diet like avoiding too much consumption of unsaturated fats, which can hasten the formation of the unwanted age spots. Note that you should consume oils like olive and coconut to prevent further occurrence of age spots. Hyper pigmentation treatment can be effective as long as you understand why it occurs.

Melasma

Although this condition usually affects pregnant women, it can also affect men especially if one uses hormone replacement therapy and for women who takes contraceptive pills. This hyper pigmentation is due to too much activity of your melanocytes caused by estrogen and progesterone. Along with too much activity comes the enhanced production of melanin once you expose yourself to sunlight. This is commonly located in areas of the body like your neck, nose, cheek, even lips and of course your forehead.

Melasma can be prevented by using products like sunscreen, and wear hat with wider brim or make use of sunglasses. One of the best treatments would be to make use of hydroquinone or other topical medications. If you are eager to get rid of this mask of pregnancy condition, you can also check on the Limelight Facial. This is a safe and non invasive type of pigment removal procedure. It targets skin redness, the effects of sun damage on your skin and of course hyper pigmentation. This procedure may cause a little tingling sensation but will definitely not hurt. You may also feel a little pinching but it will only last for an hour. Its effects can be seen after few weeks time.

Post Inflammatory Hyper-pigmentation

Short for PIH, this condition usually occurs when there's an injury to your skin. If you have acne or lesions on your skin, it is usually followed by the occurrence of PIH.

PIH can be treated using the IPL Photo facial. This procedure takes about 30 minutes to perform where pulses of light are used. This laser pigmentation treatment is quite safe; it is not only intended for people with PIH but even those with sun damaged skin.

Freckles

This hyperpigmenation condition is mainly caused by over production of melanin in the body, and over exposure to the UV rays of the sun. As soon as the melanin in your skin is damaged by the rays of the sun, the end result are freckles. Although some finds it sexy to have few freckles on the cheek, others find it disturbing.

Freckles can be prevented by simply using sun screen products, protective clothing, and if possible stay indoor during peak hours of the sun from 10am till 4pm. Laser treatment such as the Limelight Facial can also help eradicate freckles. It can lighten its appearance and leaves no signs of discoloration.
