Talk to the Hands: What They Say About Ageing (And What You Can Do About It)

Unless it's winter all year-round, you can't cover your bony and veiny hands with gloves to hide their hideous appearance (and your true age). Thanks to the popularity of dermal fillers, your hands can now enjoy the same level of attention and care that you lavish your face and neck.

While the face is the most open and vulnerable part of your body exposed to the elements, it's the hands that literally do most of the work, on top of being subjected to exposure to the same elements. Sun damage often leaves brown spots, and advancing years leave the skin thinner, which makes veins appear more prominent as they are no longer cushioned by fat due to degradation of collagen.

Hands Receive Unfair Share of Ageing

In addition, as the hands do most of the work, the small joints undergo wear and tear, causing the knuckles to become thickened and unsightly. Blood vessels also become fragile, and cause blood cells to leak even after minor injuries. These leaked cells stain the skin with a yellowish-brown tint, adding to the already aged appearance of the hands.

And of course, wrinkles often appear first on hands than anywhere else on the body. This is because the skin of the hands, and the fatty layer underneath, are thinner than that of the face to begin with. It's no wonder that, while hands reveal our true age, they sometimes age older than our faces, making us appear all the more advanced in years.

Dermal Filler Options

Filler treatment comes in many forms. Once used to address wrinkles in the face, dermal fillers have become staple for hand rejuvenation as well.  Hyaluronic acid, a substance that also naturally occurs in the body, makes the skin supple and firm. Skin care specialists in aesthetic clinics in Singapore usually reach for HA fillers such as Juvederm, Perlane or Restylane, to restore volume and structure that the skin has lost over time.

To replace lost collagen, a skin care specialist may use Poly-L-Lactic Acid fillers such as Sculptra because these fillers result in a more subtle and gradual restoration of volume. Calcium-based microspheres, on the other hand, plump the skin and helps restore lost volume. As these are similar to minerals found in the body naturally, calcium-based microspheres, such as those found in Radiesse, are absorbed by the body over time, leaving only natural collagen behind.

Of these, Juvederm is often used for plumping the hands. All the others work wonders as chin fillers, cheek fillers and fine lines treatment.

Laser Treatments

To address hyperpigmentation and sun damage to the skin of the hands, a more well-rounded type of rejuvenation may be in order. Pulses of light can be used to draw out brown spots from the deeper layers of the skin to the surface, where they would scab and fall off. Laser clinics in Singapore employ a 3D Skin Rejuvenation approach not just to diminish red or brown spots or reduce lax skin, but to treat all of the most common signs of aging not just in the hands, but also in the face and neck.

With the use of laser, collagen production can be improved so winkles, fine lines and lax skin are also addressed. Laser also leaves the topmost layer of the skin looking vibrant. As the hands often receive the brunt of the symptoms of ageing – sun damage, age spots, winkles, and sagging skin – 3D Skin Rejuvenation can help improve the outside appearance of the hands while dermal fillers help restore lost volume to make the hands look more youthful again – inside and out.
